The Illusive Love of God

By Lynn R. Ragsdale

Have you ever felt as though you were chasing something that was always just a bit out of your reach? Others seem to have grasped it, but you are just a step shy. That may be how you view the awesome but illusive “Love of God.”

The problem may be in our attempt to chase after something that is not, after all, illusive. You really can’t chase something that is not running away. Let’s just listen to the Apostle Paul who considered himself the worst of all sinners. How could the love of God really be his?

Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Knowing the nature of his own life and the human condition he continues to write in Romans some awesome and fascinating words.

Romans 8:35-39

“Who shall separate us form the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

When we visit the Upper Room with Jesus and His disciples on the night He shared Passover with them, we find them reading scripture. A very common scripture that Jewish worshippers would read at Passover was Psalm 118. Jesus was very shortly going to demonstrate everything that was in that beautiful Psalm.

Psalm 118:1-4

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let Israel say: ‘His love endures forever.’ Let the house of Aaron say: ‘His love endures forever.’ Let those who fear the Lord say: ‘His love endures forever.’”

To fully experience the illusive love of God – quit running and begin waiting! You will find that it was there all the time.
